Summary
Establishments and Levels of Service
Restaurants, cafes, canteens, bistros, fast food and takeaway stores are all comprised establishments of the hospitality industry. This is because each offers a different type and style of food as well as different levels of service. These establishments are providing a service to customers by preparing, cooking and serving food.
Formal and Buffet Service
In the past, tables at home and in restaurants was set in a formal dining style. Tables would be set with appropriate cutlery and glassware and menu courses would be individually presented to each diner.
Today while proper service is still used by many households at dinnertime and in many cafés, less formal service is usually used at home and by many food service suppliers.
Many food service providers, specifically caterers and bistros, have trended towards using the buffet facility, predominantly when catering for large Australian families and many food service contributors, such as caterers and bistros.
This type of service- prepared foods is set on a table and guests help themselves- is casual and relatively easy to set up.
Takeaway service
Take-away organizations offer a quick service of food purchased at a restaurant, for the purpose of it being eaten anywhere at any time.
To transfer the food from these restaurants foam food containers as well as paper, cardboard and plastic containers are used. Restaurants now commonly have drive through facilities or home services, and provide little seating area within the venue. Take-out is usually cheaper than table service for the same dishes.
With the demand for take-away food rising, stores are now conveniently located near entrainment venues and workplaces, in shopping centers and sometimes and extension on a service station. Outlets such as these also now have home delivery services.
Although takeaway food is commonly recognized as fast food, that is not always the case. Take-away outlets are small businesses that serve traditional, usually unhealthy food. Examples of this include, Chinese, Kebabs, McDonalds, KFC, Fish and chips as well as sushi place/ whereas fast food carries the connotation of a standardized product from a globalized chain or franchise.
Dining out
A Café is a social meeting place where customers can enjoy a cup of coffee or a small meal/snack. As cafes are becoming more popular more stores are getting located near workplaces and entrainment venues and shopping centers. Cafes generally open in the morning for breakfast and stay open until the late evening. Cafes mainly serve modern, contemporary small meals with a variety of other cultures dishes still available.
Casual dining venues often don’t require bookings and are reasonably priced and accessible. Another popular dining venue that is commonly located in clubs and pubs are bistros. Bistro’s offer a variety of food choices from all different cultures and are relaxed, inexpensive form of dining.
With restaurants becoming so common in many towns and cities main streets, which once contained shopping venues, are now being overruled with dining establishments. Restaurants have also increased in size and variety, with menus such as a Carte restaurant menu consisting of several courses, where the consumer can then choose as many meals as they would fancy.

Task 9: Establishments and Levels of Service
1. State the type of customer groups that would eat at the following types of establishments, explain the reason why.
2. Write on our class blog: Discussion 4. Name your favourite eating establishment, why is it such a good venue?
My response:
My favourite places to eat out are restaurant with informal settings, such as cafes or little corner shops. I prefer to eat at these venues as for the prices are reasonable and the amount of food supplied is a great proportion. The atmosphere of cafes is my personal favourite, it is quiet and cosy yet still brings a good vibe. As it is an informal venue, it is a great spot to met up with friends and family for a coffee and catch up. The waiting times for meals is usually minimal and can be eaten on the go if need be. It is a great environment to just relax and have a quick bite by yourself or with company.
